The quick verdict

The Camp Snap CS-8 is fun to use. I liked its Super 8 inspired shape, electronic viewfinder, and physical dials. It made recording a clip feel different from pulling out my phone.

I still put it in C tier. The plastic body felt cheap in my hands, and the roughly $200 price during my test was hard to justify. I would consider it for the shooting experience, rather than value or build quality.

The viewfinder and physical controls

You compose through an electronic viewfinder and use dials to change the aspect ratio and visual style. I enjoyed having those choices on the camera instead of looking through a menu.

There is no rear playback screen for reviewing clips. The display inside the viewfinder shows the live view; you review recorded footage after transferring it. That distinction matters if you expect to check each take immediately.

Video only, with a particular look

The CS-8 records video and has no still photo mode. It is a different product from Camp Snap’s small screen free still cameras.

The plastic body and test price

The camera looks good from a distance, but the body felt much cheaper than I expected when I picked it up. That was my biggest complaint.

At nearly $200 during my test, I wanted more from the construction. A lower current price could change the value calculation, but it would not change how my camera felt.

Should you buy one?

Consider it if you specifically want the viewfinder, physical controls, and Super 8 inspired handling. I would skip it if you care most about sturdy construction or getting the most recording capability for the money.

Check the Camp Snap CS-8 price. Compare the current cost with how much you value that way of shooting.

My verdict

I enjoyed using the CS-8, but I would not recommend it broadly at the price discussed in my test. C tier reflects that split: an appealing idea and enjoyable controls, with disappointing construction for the money.
