The quick answer
After about two years of daily use, my 10 oz Ember Mug 2 had become my favorite coffee mug. I loved keeping my coffee at a consistent temperature and used it every day. The tradeoffs were real: the interior coating had worn where I stirred with a metal spoon, and the battery was lasting only about 30 to 45 minutes off the charger by the time I made my review.
For someone who drinks slowly at a desk, that temperature control can be a nice everyday convenience. Whether it's worth the price depends on how much you value that convenience and whether you're comfortable with the care and battery limitations. My experience comes from one mug reviewed in January 2024, not a new test of every current unit.
My Ember Mug 2 experience at a glance
| What I tested | 10 oz Ember Mug 2, used and washed daily for about two years before the review |
|---|---|
| What I liked | Keeping my coffee at a consistent temperature and using the charging coaster at my desk |
| Exterior after two years | Some scuffs and scratches, but generally in good condition |
| Interior after two years | Visible scratches and worn coating around the bottom where I used a metal spoon |
| My observed battery life | About 30-45 minutes off the charger on my particular well-used mug |
| My verdict in the video | I loved using it and planned to keep using it |
Why I liked using a heated coffee mug
I didn't realize how much I would enjoy the Ember until I bought it and started using it. It became the only coffee mug I used because I liked having my drink stay at a consistent temperature while I went about my day.
The idea is straightforward: pour in a hot drink and the mug helps maintain a chosen temperature instead of letting it cool as quickly as it would in an ordinary open mug. I kept the charging coaster where I could set the mug down, which made it easy to use as part of my routine.
If you finish your coffee quickly, an ordinary mug may be all you need. If you regularly get distracted and come back to a cold drink, the Ember's temperature control may be more appealing. I didn't perform a controlled temperature-retention comparison in the video, so my recommendation is based on my daily experience.
How the coating held up after two years
The outside of my mug still looked good overall, despite some scuffs and scratches from regular use. The inside told a different story. The coating near the bottom had worn away and the bottom had visible scratches where I stirred.
I used a metal spoon throughout that period, and I believe that contributed to the wear. I can't isolate the exact cause or predict when another mug will show the same damage, but I wouldn't repeat that choice. Ember recommends using a wooden or silicone spoon because metal utensils can damage the coating. Its care instructions also recommend a soft sponge.
My mug continued to work in the video, but an electrical function test doesn't establish whether a damaged interior is suitable for continued use. If your mug's coating is peeling or damaged, contact Ember for guidance about your particular mug and the available support options.
Battery life after daily use
By the time I recorded the review, I was getting roughly 30 to 45 minutes from a full charge off the coaster. I noticed that this was less than I used to get. That number is my observation after about two years, not a standardized battery test or a prediction for every Mug 2.
For comparison, Ember currently lists up to 90 minutes for the 10 oz Mug 2 and up to 80 minutes for the 14 oz version under its stated conditions, including a 135°F target temperature. Pour temperature, room temperature, target setting and what you add to the drink can all affect runtime. See Ember's battery-life guidance.
The coaster matters if you tend to drink at a desk. It supplies power and can maintain the temperature while the mug sits on it. I described it as wireless in the video because I just set the mug down, but the coaster connects through physical contact pins and itself plugs into power. Make sure the mug is seated correctly and the contacts are dry.
Temperature control and the app
Ember says the Mug 2 can be set between 120°F and 145°F using its app. Without pairing to a phone, the mug can still operate at its default 135°F setting, though app features such as custom temperature selection aren't available. I didn't test every app feature in this review.
The mug is designed primarily to maintain the temperature of a freshly poured hot drink. If you're hoping it will quickly heat a cold drink from room temperature, check Ember's guidance first and set your expectations accordingly. The manufacturer describes the features and included charging coaster on its Mug 2 product page.
How to care for the Ember Mug 2
- Hand wash it. Ember says the original Mug and Mug 2 are hand-wash only. Use warm, soapy water and a soft sponge.
- Skip metal utensils. Use a wooden or silicone spoon to reduce the risk of scratching the interior coating.
- Dry before charging. Dry the bottom of the mug and charging contacts before setting it on the coaster. Ember says wet contacts can corrode.
- Keep the coaster dry. It is an electrical accessory; don't put it in the dishwasher or immerse it.
- Don't microwave the mug. It contains electronics and metal.
Ember's newer Mug 3 has different cleaning instructions. Don't assume those dishwasher instructions apply to the Mug 2; check the care guide for your actual model.
Is the Ember Mug 2 worth buying?
For me, yes. The convenience of consistently warm coffee was useful enough that I reached for it every day, and the mug still worked throughout the two years I discussed. The worn coating and shorter battery life are reasons to go in with realistic expectations, especially if you plan to use it away from the coaster.
I tested the 10 oz version. The Ember Mug 2 link in my video opened a black 14 oz listing when I checked, so compare the size, color, included accessories and current price before ordering. The larger mug is a different capacity, and I didn't personally test that size in this review.
Frequently asked questions
How long did my Ember Mug 2 last on battery after two years?
My 10 oz mug ran for about 30 to 45 minutes off the charger when I made the review. Battery life varies with the mug's condition and how it is used.
Can I use a metal spoon in an Ember Mug 2?
Ember recommends a wooden or silicone spoon because metal can damage the coating. My own mug developed scratches and worn coating after I regularly stirred with a metal spoon.
Is the Ember Mug 2 dishwasher safe?
No. Ember says the Mug 2 should be hand washed. Its newer Mug 3 has different cleaning instructions.
Does the Mug 2 work without the app?
Yes. Ember says it can operate at the default 135°F setting without a phone. The app is used to select a different target temperature and access other customization features.
Can I keep the drink warm on the charging coaster?
Yes. Ember says the powered coaster can maintain the set temperature while the mug sits on it. Dry the mug and contacts before charging.
My verdict
The Ember Mug 2 earned its place in my daily routine because I enjoyed having my coffee stay warm while I worked. My two-year-old example also showed that battery life and coating wear deserve attention. If you decide to buy one, use the correct care routine, consider how often you'll have access to the coaster and choose the size that fits your drinking habits.
