The quick verdict

I liked the Sony P32 for simple snapshots with soft detail, flare, and other visible imperfections. Its roughly 3MP files appealed to me even though they are far from technically clean.

There is no optical zoom, and it uses Sony Memory Stick storage rather than SD. I would check the card and file transfer setup before choosing a cheap used example.

Small body and fixed focal length

The P32 is small and light, with the silver styling I associate with early digital cameras. I found it easy to carry in a pocket.

Its fixed focal length means you cannot zoom optically to change the framing. That keeps operation simple, but you need to move or accept a wider view when a subject is farther away.

Soft photos and visible flare

The photos from my camera were soft, and the lens could produce obvious flare and ghosting. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed them.

I would choose it because I liked those examples, rather than expecting sharp detail or room for large crops. It is better suited to casual photos where you enjoy the imperfections than work that needs a clean, detailed file.

AA batteries and Memory Stick storage

The camera runs on two AA batteries. Rechargeable AAs and a charged spare pair are a practical setup for regular use.

Storage takes more planning. Check the exact Memory Stick format, capacity, and any adapter against the camera’s requirements. Ask the seller to demonstrate saving and playing back a photo, and confirm you can transfer the files.

Use Sony’s P32 manuals and Memory Stick compatibility information when checking a card. Do not assume every card with a similar name will work.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Small, light body and simple operation.
  • Photos with softness and flare I liked.
  • Replaceable AA batteries.

Cons

  • No optical zoom.
  • Limited detail and cropping room.
  • Memory Stick cards and transfer equipment need checking.

Buying a used P32

Compare condition and included accessories, especially the card. Check the battery contacts, flash, buttons, screen, and image saving. A tested camera with a working card can be better value than a cheaper body alone.

My verdict

I enjoyed the P32 as a small, simple camera for imperfect everyday photos. I would buy it only after sorting out the Memory Stick and file transfer requirements. If you want optical zoom or sharper files, look at another compact.
