Canon Rebel T7 Review: Still Worth It for Beginners?

Published · Updated

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 might be seven years old, but it’s still one of the top-selling beginner DSLR cameras out there. If you're just getting started with photography or video and you're on a tight budget, is the Canon T7 still a solid choice in 2025? Or should you skip it for something newer?

Price & Kit Lens Overview

You can usually grab the Canon T7 with the 18–55mm kit lens for around $479.

  • The kit lens isn’t anything special, but it’s a decent starter.
  • It helps you figure out what focal lengths you prefer before you invest in better glass.
  • The T7 uses Canon’s EF mount — which means you get access to an insane range of lenses from Canon and third-party brands.

Image Quality

  • 24MP APS-C Sensor: Still very relevant. Same resolution as Canon's newer mirrorless cameras like the R50 and R10.
  • Excellent sharpness and dynamic range for general photography.
  • With good lighting and a solid lens, the T7 can deliver seriously nice shots.

Burst Mode

  • Only 3 frames per second — not ideal for sports or fast-moving subjects.
  • Fine for casual use, but if you want speed, look elsewhere.

Video Performance

  • Maxes out at 1080p 30fps
  • No 4K. No slow motion. No mic input. No headphone jack.
  • If you're looking for a hybrid photo/video camera — skip this one.
  • Most modern iPhones beat the T7 in video.

Screen & Interface

  • Fixed 3" LCD — no flip-out, no touchscreen.
  • All settings must be adjusted via buttons. It works, but it’s outdated.
  • Great ergonomics though — deep grip and light body (475g).

Ports & Build

  • Mini HDMI, mini USB, remote port
  • Battery and SD card slot underneath.
  • Plasticky build but very lightweight.
  • Basic controls: shutter, mode dial, pop-up flash button, etc.

Recommended Beginner Lenses

Want to get better photos than what the kit lens gives you? These two lenses are top picks:

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM

  • Perfect for portraits, products, low light.
  • Great background blur (bokeh).
  • Canon’s most affordable prime lens.
    Buy the 50mm f/1.8

Canon EF-S 10–18mm IS STM

  • Affordable ultra-wide. Great for vlogging, real estate, and travel.
  • Built-in image stabilization.
    Buy the 10–18mm

My Favorite Budget Camera Bag

The K&F Concept Mini Camera Bag fits the Canon T7 kit, spare lenses, batteries, and extras — and it’s compact and budget-friendly.

Standout Features

  • 24MP sensor still holds up in 2025.
  • Canon Camera Connect app lets you transfer photos straight to your phone.
  • Huge EF lens ecosystem — so many affordable, quality lenses out there.

T7 Limitations

  • Outdated DSLR body vs. modern mirrorless cameras.
  • Slower autofocus.
  • Weak video specs (no 4K, no high frame rate, no mic input).
  • Fixed screen and no touchscreen = more button pressing.

If you can stretch your budget, the Canon R50, R50V, or R10 offer way better specs across the board.

Final Verdict: Is the Canon T7 Worth It in 2025?

Yes — if you're on a tight budget and just want a reliable beginner camera to start learning photography. The T7 can still produce awesome images in the right hands.

But if you care about video, autofocus, or future-proofing — consider stepping up to a newer mirrorless model.
