The quick verdict

Instax cameras are S tier for me at parties, weddings, and family gatherings. You can take a photo, wait for it to develop, and hand someone a physical keepsake.

Film is an ongoing expense, but the print is the reason I would bring one. I use a phone or digital camera when I want to take lots of pictures without paying for every frame.

Check the Fujifilm Instax mini 12 price. This linked option uses instax mini film.

Why I like it at social events

A print gives people something to pass around or take home. That makes the camera useful at a gathering in a way another file on my phone does not.

I am not choosing Instax for maximum sharpness or editing flexibility. I like the experience of making a picture for someone while we are together.

Choose the film format first

Instax cameras do not all use the same film. The linked mini 12 uses instax mini. If you choose another model, check its exact film requirement before ordering.

Camera format Film to buy
instax mini, including mini 12 instax mini film
instax SQUARE instax SQUARE film
instax WIDE instax WIDE film

These formats are not interchangeable. Fujifilm’s film compatibility guide can help you match a particular camera.

Budget for the photos you will take

Compare the price per exposure when choosing a film pack. Allow for retakes and decide how many photos you want guests to keep. The camera price alone does not cover an evening of shooting.

Buy enough compatible film before an event and follow Fujifilm’s storage and handling instructions. For frequent everyday shooting, that recurring expense is the main reason I would also carry a digital camera.

Which Instax should you choose?

Start with the print size you want and the cost of its film. Then compare cameras within that format. This is my view of Instax as a camera family, so the mini 12 link is a specific buying option rather than a claim that every model has identical controls or features.

Compare the Fujifilm Instax mini 12. Add instax mini film to the budget, and check whether a listing already includes any.

My verdict

I would bring an Instax when the goal is to share physical photos with the people around me. For that job, it remains S tier. Choose the right film format and accept the cost per shot before buying.
