Sony NEX Clean HDMI Output: My NEX Streaming Workaround

The quick answer: In my Sony NEX-6 test, I couldn't get a full clean HDMI image straight out of the camera. I did find a workaround: remove as much display information as possible, then crop the remaining borders from the picture in your streaming software or after recording. It can work in a pinch, but you give up image quality.
What clean HDMI means on a Sony NEX
Clean HDMI is a video signal without camera menus, exposure settings or other display information on top of the picture. Having an HDMI port doesn't automatically mean that you can turn all of that information off.
When I connected my NEX-6 to a Feelworld external monitor, the output included camera information around the image. The settings below gave me a usable image in the middle without information over the footage in my test. The signal still had information around the edges, so this is a crop workaround, not a full clean output from the camera.
My Sony NEX-6 HDMI settings
In the video, I used these settings on my NEX-6:
- Set the image aspect ratio to 16:9.
- Turn off the grid lines.
- Set the power-saving time to its longest available setting.
- Set HDMI resolution to 1080p.
- Set the display to show no display information.
Connect the camera to an external monitor or capture device and check the actual output. In my setup, the 16:9 picture was surrounded by information, but the information wasn't directly over the image. Your display mode, camera model and connected equipment can affect what you see, so check the feed before you start.
Sony's NEX-6 manual specifies an HDMI mini connector on the camera end. Use a cable with the right connector for your monitor or capture device at the other end. The 1080p output setting describes the signal sent over HDMI, not the resolution of the cropped portion you keep.
How to crop the output for streaming
For a computer stream, connect the camera's HDMI output to a compatible capture device, then add that device as a video source in your streaming software. Crop the source until only the central 16:9 image remains, then position and size it in your scene. Check the preview for any remaining camera information.
If you're recording the HDMI signal externally, the surrounding information will still be in the original recording. Crop the image in your editor afterward. For an external monitor alone, the information remains visible around the picture unless your particular monitor can crop or zoom the input.
The tradeoff: cropping throws away part of the signal. Enlarging the remaining image to fill a frame won't restore the detail that was lost. This is useful for a small webcam box or a quick setup, but it isn't the best choice if you need the highest-quality full-frame feed.
Does this work on other Sony NEX cameras?
My video description lists the NEX-3, 3N, 5, 5N, 5R, 5T, 6 and 7 as cameras to try with this approach. The example I demonstrate is the NEX-6, not a separate test of each model. Menus and output behavior can differ, so don't assume every body will produce the same result. Try the settings available on your camera and inspect its HDMI feed before relying on it.
In the 2020 video, I said NEX cameras didn't have clean HDMI. That statement reflects the built-in approach I was discussing, not a test of every firmware modification or every NEX model. If clean, full-frame output is essential, confirm it for the exact camera and setup before buying.
Should you use a newer camera instead?
If you already own a NEX-6 and the cropped picture looks good enough for your stream, this is a simple way to put it to work. If you're choosing a camera specifically for clean HDMI, I'd look at a model with a documented clean output instead of buying a NEX body on the assumption that this crop will meet your needs.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Sony NEX-6 have clean HDMI?
In my test with the camera's normal settings, I couldn't remove everything from the full HDMI output. I could remove overlays from the central image and crop away the information around it in software.
Does setting HDMI to 1080p make the cropped image full HD?
No. The camera's output can be set to 1080p, but the picture you're keeping takes up only part of that signal. Cropping and enlarging it reduces the available detail compared with a full-frame clean signal.
Can I use a Sony NEX camera for live streaming?
You can try its HDMI output with a compatible capture device and streaming software. Whether this particular crop works depends on the model and the feed it produces. Test the picture and any overlays before a live session.
Does the HDMI cable remove camera information?
No. The cable carries the signal the camera sends. Changing the display settings and cropping the image are separate steps.
